let me take you with me to a place where we can go it’s not a path that many people know some twists here & some turns there, no pavements to be found but I bid you: take a look around surroundings slowly change - familiar to strange in the blink of an eye they fade into the background again follow me & don’t look back, we’ll call this path our own you won’t need to remember the way back home don’t you feel all better breathing this fresh air? it’s winter but it’s blooming everywhere sometimes pain’s the greatest pleasure that you’ll know but leave all that behind, come on, let’s go surroundings slowly change - familiar to strange in the blink of an eye they fade into the background again follow me & don’t look back, we’ll call this path our own you won’t need to remember the way back home

Summer Sky 03:14
a lazy summer day swept the clouds away with every foggy notion that we filled our heads with yesterday with the clear summer sky above us so high we were so happy we could die, so happy we could die I’ve shed so many tears, they used to fall like rain today’s the last time, swear I’m never crying again all that we need today is just a bit of shade & every last day of my life will be a sunny day a lazy summer day to sweep the clouds away with every foggy notion that we filled our heads with yesterday with the clear summer sky above us so high we’ll be so happy we could die, so happy we could die I have my memories to last me all my life I’ll carry them with me & with me they will die I’ll keep this memory when we each go our own way & I know that each day of my life will be a sunny day a lazy summer day to sweep the clouds away with every foggy notion that we filled our heads with yesterday with the clear summer sky above us so high we’ll be so happy we could die, so happy we could die

where are all the friends who we were sure would stick around? where is all the time we used to think would not run out? I know that time is hard to find but you can call on me whenever I know that time is running out but give me some time, if not forever time will pass you by & with each day you’re slightly older but I know I’ll have these memories long after tonight is all over I know that life is all too short & when you turn around it’s never I know that time is running out but give me some time, if not forever maybe one day you’ll want to erase me maybe - until then give me some time I know that time is hard to find but you can call on me whenever I know that time is running out but give me some time, if not forever

Lemonade 02:27
the summer makes you feel alive before it swiftly passes by & leaves you waiting for the winter to shed its skin all over again we used to drink our lemonade we used to hide out in the shade & now we're dreaming of the summer & sunnier days whenever it rains winter's light is dim & the days are short so won't you please let me know when I'll see you again? the summer makes you feel alive before it swiftly passes by & leaves you waiting for the winter to shed its skin all over again

The Flowers 04:16
I have my books I hide behind that tell me how to mould my life day in, day out, you’ve got to know how to control internal strife what happened to this life? folks used to be so nice things aren’t what they used to be now people are so selfish - so I don’t love anyone anyone except for me why don’t they stop & look at the flowers? what are they always rushing for? why don’t they see the sun that shines into their eyes? what are they always rushing for? I have my books I hide behind that tell me how to change the world but sometimes I feel no one ever even listens anymore what happened to good times? shopkeepers used to smile people used to be refined now people are such pigs - so I don’t love anything anything I can’t enshrine why don’t they stop & look at the flowers? what are they always rushing for? why don’t they see the sun that shines into their eyes? what are they always rushing for? why don’t they stop & look at the flowers? what are they always rushing for? idiot leaders, television what are they always rushing for?

fantasies & fairytales & memories of yesterdays hidden plots, invented games are taking up my time there are plans I’d like to make & words that I would like to say but I feel tied up inside & haven’t got the mind ‘cause I’ve been sleeping through my days & I’ve been living life in dreams the life I’ve had before today is not as real as it appears drawing blanks, collecting signs, a fashion suited for the times a catalogue of all the things I’d like to say to you there are plans that we could make & things that we could talk about but how can I know where to start when I’m seeing right through you? ‘cause I’ve been sleeping through my days & I’ve been living life in dreams the life I’ve had before today is not as real as it appears

ministers rush through the parliament halls sign all the bills that will rattle the walls call for a ceasefire & call for the press as they pretty up murder in the official address look what you've done, you created all this you cast the first stones, now you rally for peace you speak with such dignity while you spout your white lies & as one all agree to an increase in the strikes see them look down from their pulpits so high “does the root of all evil in man’s nature lie?” with indignation they speak of men’s deeds they curse at the branches - they planted the seeds look what you’ve done, you created all this you cast the first stones, now you rally for peace you speak with such dignity while you spout your white lies & as one all agree to an increase in the strikes

just as spring always comes after winter every halcyon summer comes before a fall they always tell you just to roll with the punches but never how to tear through a wall so there you go, I think I’ve told you what I know sometimes you want to run but you have to crawl so here I am playing games with memory & desire wondering if it means anything at all sometimes you feel you can’t remember the good days & all that you can do is resign to a sigh they always tell you just to take the bad with the good, yeah but never how to steal the moon from the sky so there you go, I think I’ve told you what I know sometimes you want to run but you have to crawl so here I am playing games with memory & desire wondering if it means anything at all

Daydreams 03:26
daydreams fill your imagination, always looking for a new sensation you’re not satisfied with the life you’ve been leading & every time that you pass the station seeing all the people going on vacation you can’t help but think, think about leaving but would it really satisfy you to leave all this behind? maybe a momentary escape alone won’t chase the clouds away but you can’t find a real solution so you make a resolution to go away on a summer’s day to go away on a summer’s day the daydream’s taken hold of you, it’s something when you’re feeling blue you've got work today but you can’t help the feeling the way your boss talks down to you, you think you know just what you have to do today is the day, the day that you’re leaving but could it really satisfy you to leave all this behind? maybe a momentary escape alone won’t chase the clouds away until you find a real solution you have made a resolution you’re going away on a summer’s day you’re leaving this town on a sunny day you’re going away on a summer’s day if not today then another day
10.
you grew up watching the world go by you grew up after a long, long while blinded by the bright city lights that shine like stars that you can't count doesn't it feel more lonely the more places that you go & doesn't your voice seem that much softer the louder that you shout? now we cling on like to a sleeve to what we know & what we believe & what we want is just to grasp it all in our hands we grew up thinking our parents were right then we thought only we’d seen the light we were blinded by the bright city lights & we were wrong more times than we could count but doesn't it feel more lonely the older that you get & doesn't your voice seem that much softer the louder that you shout? so now we cling on like to a sleeve to what we know & what we believe & what we want is just to grasp it all in our hands

about

Ljubljana's Buddhist Bubblegum debuted in mid-2020 with two well-received demo singles before following them up with Dreaming of the Desert, a split album with Wiggly in May 2022. The album was released by New Jersey's Cavern Brew Records and even saw a CD release; it was promoted by two singles, 'Paper Ridges' and 'Merry-Go-Round'. A third single, 'Seems Like Yesterday', followed in July 2022, appearing on Cavern Brew's farewell compilation album.

Now, about a year later, Buddhist Bubblegum are back with their full-length debut, What We Know and What We Believe, officially (self-)released on the 26th of June 2023.

It has been a long time in the works. The first song written for the album, 'The Flowers', was already conceived in early 2021, while the final, 'Memory and Desire', sometime in early 2022. The bulk of the recording took place in the wintery months of late 2021 and early 2022, with further recording throughout the first half of 2022. It then stayed in production limbo for a handful of months before being mixed, mastered and quickly set for release.

What We Know and What We Believe is a stylistically diverse affair, with songs ranging from the nostalgic indie pop Buddhist Bubblegum have made their name on ('Some Time, If Not Forever', 'The Flowers'), to Dylanesque folk ('Curse at the Branches'), to neo-psychedelia ('Summer Sky', 'A Place Where We Can Go'). In one moment, we'll hear echoes of the garage rock of the heavier moments of Dreaming of the Desert ('Invented Games'), then a Beach Boys-esque piano ballad ('What We Believe') in the next breath.

Lyrically, too, the album covers everything from biting satire ("I have my books I hide behind / that tell me how to change the world / but sometimes I feel no one ever even listens anymore" - 'The Flowers') to heart-on-sleeve earnestness ("where are all the friends / who we were sure would stick around? / where is all the time / we used to think would not run out?" - 'Some Time, If Not Forever') to political commentary ("look what you’ve done, you created all this / you cast the first stones, now you rally for peace" - 'Curse at the Branches').

Buddhist Bubblegum have played live only a handful of times, and so far exclusively in Ljubljana, in the form of solo performances by singer/songwriter Wiktor Szotowski. The project is, in fact, chiefly a home recording outlet for Szotowski, who, with the exception of some experiments in electronic music (indebted to artists such as Tangerine Dream and Aphex Twin) in his teenage years, started recording more prolifically and seriously in 2017. From the very beginning, his output has encompassed a wide variety of musical styles, from jangle pop, to folk, to hypnagogic pop and neo-psychedelia, to the electronic music he got his start with. Only a relatively small selection of these styles have been reflected in Buddhist Bubblegum's music so far, but that is certain to change as more comes out.
